This can make it difficult to know when your air conditioner genuinely needs a professional deep clean. Some homeowners assume every system must be cleaned every six months. Others wait until there is a strong smell, visible black buildup or water leaking down the wall.

The honest answer sits somewhere in the middle.

For many Brisbane homes, checking the internal condition each year is a sensible baseline. However, the actual cleaning frequency should depend on how often the unit is used, the room it is installed in, pets, household dust, moisture, coastal exposure and what is visibly accumulating inside the system.

Filter cleaning is normal homeowner maintenance. It may involve:

A proper internal clean goes beyond the areas easily reached from the room.

One may run for ten hours a day in a busy living area with pets. The other may be installed in a spare room and used for only a few weekends each summer.

A fair cleaning recommendation should consider:

  • Runtime
  • Visible condition
  • Smells

  • Household conditions
  • Previous maintenance
  • Drainage performance

An annual check gives you a useful routine without automatically assuming that every unit needs the same work.

9 signs your split system air conditioner is due for a deep clean

1. It smells musty or stale when it starts

A musty smell is one of the clearest signs that basic filter maintenance may no longer be enough.

Moisture naturally forms on the indoor coil while the air conditioner is cooling. Dust and residue can settle on damp internal surfaces, including the coil, fan barrel and drain tray.

The smell may be strongest:

The fan barrel is the long cylindrical fan behind the air outlet. Its narrow blades push conditioned air into the room.

Dust can gradually form a coating along these blades. Because the barrel sits behind the coil and louvres, it is often missed during basic homeowner cleaning.

  • Reduce the amount of air the fan can move

4. The airflow feels weaker than it used to

Dirty filters are the first thing to check when airflow drops.

This is often the point where repeatedly washing the filters provides little additional benefit.

How to safely check whether the fan barrel is dirty

You can perform a simple visual check without dismantling the air conditioner.

  1. Turn the air conditioner off. Wait until the fan has completely stopped moving.
  2. Use a small torch. Shine it gently through the air outlet below the louvres.
  3. Look behind the outlet. The fan barrel appears as a long cylinder with many narrow blades.
  4. Check several areas. Look across the left, middle and right sides because buildup may not be even.
  5. Do not put fingers or tools inside. The louvres and fan blades are delicate, and internal components should not be forced.

What light buildup may look like

A small amount of fine dust may appear as a light grey coating along the blade edges.

This does not always mean an urgent professional clean is required, particularly if the unit has strong airflow, no smell and is otherwise well maintained.

What heavier buildup may look like

A fan barrel that is overdue may have:

  • Thick grey material along the blades
  • Dark or patchy residue
  • Uneven clumps

What not to do during the check

  • Do not rotate the fan barrel forcefully

  • Do not bend or remove the louvres without correct instructions
  • Do not direct water into the unit
  • Do not continue if you notice exposed wiring or damaged parts

A visual check is intended to help assess condition, not to replace safe cleaning equipment and water containment.

Why clean filters do not mean the rest of the air conditioner is clean

Filters are designed to catch larger airborne particles, but they are not a perfect barrier.

Fine dust can pass through or move around the filter edges. Once inside, it may settle on damp surfaces and become harder to remove.

The indoor coil

Air passes through the evaporator coil before entering the room.

During cooling, the coil becomes cold and moisture condenses on it. Fine dust can stick to the fins and collect between narrow spaces.

The visible front surface may look acceptable while deeper sections remain dirty.

The fan barrel

The fan barrel sits deeper inside the system and is not protected from every fine particle.

Its many blades can gradually hold a layer of dust and residue, particularly when moisture and continuous use are involved.

The drain tray

Water running off the coil falls into the drain tray. This wet environment can collect fine debris and residue over time.

The airflow channels

Dust can also settle along plastic channels, corners, louvres and the discharge opening.

Clean filters are important, but they tell you only about the condition of the filters. They do not prove that the fan barrel, coil, tray and hidden airflow path are clean.

This is also why spraying only the visible coil may not address the main source of an odour or airflow restriction.

Frequent daily use

The more hours the system runs, the more room air it processes.

A unit that operates every day will generally need closer monitoring than one used only occasionally.

Pets

  2. Isolate the power. The system is switched off and isolated before internal cleaning.
  3. Protect the surrounding area. I prepare the wall, floor and nearby surfaces and install controlled wash containment.
  4. Remove suitable components. Filters, the outer case and louvres are removed where appropriate for the model and condition.
  5. Clean removable parts. Filters and suitable plastic components are cleaned separately.
